Design for Municipal Assembly

Project type

Design project

Date

2021

Location

Aberdeen

This project was undertaken in the final semester of my third year of study at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. This was an individual project and all the work produced here is my own.

My objective was to create a space that could be used by both the community and local governance to break down distinctions between the two.

Nature is integrated into the project by the generous number of openings and the strict single-story height which is maintained throughout the whole edifice. A contrast exists between the circulatory system of the exterior and the interior which references our unconscious tradition of accommodation and consensus.

The concepts of ennoblement, semiotic engagement and adaptability are all tied into this project. But the most inseparable themes where those of politics and community. The precedent of the ancient Stoa offered an example of participatory communal democracy. In my opinion it is vital that we foster and encourage this to maintain democracy.
